Ms. Theresa Urquilla
Biography
Ms. Urquilla is a native of Manhattan, Kansas. In 1999, she earned her undergraduate degree from the University of Central Missouri where she majored in Secondary Education with a focus in Spanish, English, and Middle School Language Arts. She earned her master’s degree in Curriculum and Instruction with an emphasis in Special Reading K-12 from the University of Central Missouri in 2002 and received her administration certification from DoDEA after attending Tarleton State University in Killeen, Texas in 2004.
Ms. Urquilla brings more than 23 years of experience in education to MEMS, having worked as an educator in Missouri and Texas, as well as for DoDEA in Japan, Bahrain, Italy, and Puerto Rico.Â
She started her career in Warrensburg, Missouri while completing her student teaching. She then taught ½ a year middle school in Sedalia, Missouri before moving on for two years at Lee’s Summit High School near Kansas City. Later she moved to Killeen, Texas and taught at Shoemaker and Killeen High Schools, respectively. While in Killeen, she earned her ESL certification, studied for her administration certification, and worked with elementary ESL students during summer school.
Ms. Urquilla taught Spanish, English, Reading and SLI at Vicenza High School. While at VHS, she also served as athletic director, sponsored Spanish Honor Society, all four classes, Future Educator’s Association, several clubs, and sports along with department and literacy leader positions.
Most recently, Ms. Urquilla has been serving as the Assistant Principal at Antilles High School in Fort Buchanan, Puerto Rico.
Throughout her educational career, Ms. Urquilla has served as a team leader, CSI, Literacy and ESL coordinator and department chair. In addition to her educational leadership roles, she also volunteered in the community as the president of USYS (United States Youth Soccer) and was interim athletic director for the south district in 2017.
Ms. Urquilla’s family includes a daughter who graduated from Sigonella Middle High School and a son who graduated from Antilles High School. In her spare time, she enjoys traveling, spending time with friends and family and reading.
The 2023-2024 school year represents her 24th year in education – 20 of those years with DoDEA. She looks forward to continuing to serve the children of military families in Guam. Ms. Urquilla considers it an honor and a privilege to work with military children, their families, and their communities. She is honored and humbled to have been given the opportunity to continue this work at MEMS.
