About Our School

Welcome to McCool EMS!

Commander William C. McCool Elementary/Middle School, formerly known as Guam South ES/MS, is located in Sumay, Guam, on U.S. Naval Station. The school was renamed on August 29, 2003, in honor of Commander William Cameron “Willie” McCool, a U.S. Navy Commander, NASA astronaut, and pilot of the Space Shuttle Columbia, who tragically lost his life when the shuttle disintegrated during re-entry. McCool spent part of his early life on Guam when his father was stationed at U.S. Naval Base. During his time on Guam, he attended local schools, including Dededo Middle School and John F. Kennedy High School. Growing up in a military community helped shape his strong work ethic, curiosity, and commitment to service—values that later guided him in his distinguished career as a U.S. Navy Commander and NASA astronaut.

Today, the school proudly serves approximately 830 students in Pre- Kindergarten through 8th grade and is supported by a dedicated staff of over 80 teachers and educational aides.

School Goals

CSI at McCool Elementary Middle School

The Blueprint for Continuous Improvement is DoDEA’s strategic plan for school years 2025/26 through 2029/30. The title reflects the philosophy that drives DoDEA’s strategic direction. A blueprint is an actionable plan that communicates and guides the work of all involved in a project. It is flexible and can be updated as the project develops and needs change. This is also true of our Blueprint, which serves as the foundation for all planning within DoDEA and directs our collective energies and resources as we strive to realize our vision. Further, the Blueprint will be continuously updated to reflect progress and shifts in students’ needs and the environment.
